  • Linux, Opie, SNES9x running on the iPaq
We just ran across two Japanese sites with lots of iPaq Linux info, featuring some great shots of the iPaq running Linux and various other applications, such as the Opie graphical interface and the SNES9x console emulator. It's great to see Linux on the iPaq in action, so have a look at the sites: The content is largely in Japanese, but for those that don't read the language, the images are still great.
  • Screenshots of the iPAQ running X-windows!
It was pointed out in the discussion forums here at iPAQLinux.com (as we were away on 4th of July vacation type thingies) that handhelds.org has placed on-line some...

photos of an iPAQ being opened and running X

...and...

screencaptures of the iPAQ running X

...quite the thing. It's pretty exciting to see Compaq guys hacking the iPAQ so. There's even an X-based handwriting recognition system of some sort running on the unit, visible in the images. It doesn't seem as though it will be long before a well-rounded "iPAQ distribution" makes its way on-line. I definitely cannot wait!
  • LinuxWorld's "The Penguinista's PDA" article
LinuxWorld has placed a rather informative article on-line regarding the current state of Linux on the iPAQ. Within is the first confirmation that we have been able to find indicating that a rather full-featured Linux distribution has been placed on the unit:
The device not only has a standard Linux distribution on it but also features advanced features such as X Windows, networking tools, an MP3 audio recorder and player, and even an MPEG video player. [clip] What's really cool is that the device runs a low-footprint version of X. The frame buffer for the device was created by Jim Gettys, one of the original creators of X Window System, with the help of Keith Packard, another member of the original X Window team. The H3600's X version fits in about 600 KB and consumes little memory because of the relatively small size of the screen. The same frame buffer is already in the standard X Window distribution, so there are no new surprises for developers here.
...very exciting stuff. We are attempting to locate a source for any further information and screenshots of the iPAQ with Linux shown running on its LCD. Stay tuned.
  • Review and photo links
As the first few lucky people are beginning to receive their iPAQ's, it's becoming apparent that a number of them have digital cameras and webservers as well...so the reviews and photo pages are popping up here and there. Be sure to glance over to the left and check out some of these new sites. Interesting stuff. One of the most interesting being the Compaq iPAQ Direct Sunlight Pictures page. Quite a difference that reflective screen makes on a sunny day. I'm really impressed with that. ...I want mine...
  • iPAQ's Shipping!
It seems that the first wave of iPAQ's has started to filter into the hands of anxious users out there. First out of the gate on delivering was pdamart, who provided detailed information about their incoming shipment status, etc. on the newsgroups. Good show. One of the first recipients of a production unit, Pocketnow.com, wrote a brief review (with lots of great images) which can be found here.

After I get some Perl 5 issues sorted out with my webhost, the discussion forums should be on-line. Maybe another day or so.

  • Welcome to iPAQLinux.com, we're live!
Welcome to iPAQLinux.com! Happily we were able to respond quickly to the news that Linux on the Compaq iPAQ is a reality, and get this page online. Having been serious Newton MP2x00 users in the past, all of us here at iPAQLinux have experienced, first-hand, the impressive performance of the StrongARM processor. The thought of a 206MHz SA-1110 running Linux, in a package that will easily sit in a shirt pocket is quite amazing. I can picture a job interview for a developer position where all you need to show off your most impressive piece of Linux/PHP3/Apache/MySQL web-application work is a live ethernet jack in the interviewer's office. Voila! Instant, live, demo--right on the "server," right out of your pocket. That may be a bit of a worked-up scenario, but you get the picture.

As iPAQ's start trickling into consumers' hands (no confirmation on any deliveries as yet) it will be interesting to see where the iPAQ + Linux combination takes us. With an IBM MicroDrive sitting in that CF sleeve, I think the potential here is great. Will X be ported? OpenGL after that? We're anxious to find out. One of the most exciting things about this particular unit is the creator--Compaq. Check some of their links to the left and you'll see that they may be the ones who do most of the "hacking" of the iPAQ. It's a good sitatuion. Let's see what happens....
